Post-Surgical Physical Therapy
Rehabilitation after surgery should start with the procedure you had, the restrictions that protect it, and the daily activities you need to regain. Orlando City Health & Wellness provides post-surgical physical therapy as part of its physical therapy services in Orlando/Baldwin Park and Winter Park.
Ask about a post-surgical PT evaluation. Share your surgery type and your surgical team's instructions when scheduling so the office can confirm the appropriate next step.

A plan built around your surgery, not a generic calendar
A knee replacement and a tendon repair do not have interchangeable rehabilitation rules. After a rotator cuff repair, for example, protecting the repaired tissue affects when movement and strengthening can progress. Your surgical protocol matters even if a movement feels manageable. AAOS explains why protection and staged rehabilitation matter after rotator cuff repair.
OCHW's physical therapy service includes postoperative rehabilitation and following the surgeon's protocol. Bring the instructions you received; if something is missing or unclear, identifying that question is more useful than guessing.
What the evaluation helps clarify
- Your starting point: the surgery date, current symptoms, permitted activity, and relevant medical history.
- Your everyday priorities: the tasks at home, work, or recreation you want to discuss.
- Your next steps: what the plan is intended to address and which restrictions still apply.
Ask the therapist to explain what each part of the plan is for and how recommendations relate to your surgeon's instructions. You should leave knowing who to contact when an instruction or symptom raises a question.
Movement, strength, and practical tasks
Rehabilitation can involve more than an exercise list. After knee replacement, for example, physical therapists may help with knee movement, strengthening, walking, and safe movement between a bed, chair, and car. Needs change during recovery, so the activities selected depend on the assessment and stage of care. Read APTA's explanation of physical therapy after knee replacement.
Exercises between visits may be part of the plan. Ask for clear instructions and tell the therapist if you cannot safely carry them out in your home. Do not borrow another patient's routine or increase activity just because the same number of weeks has passed.
Before your appointment
Have your discharge instructions, any referral or protocol, medication list, and surgical team's contact information ready. Ask about appropriate clothing, transport, and any walking aid or brace you have been instructed to use. A short question list can help keep the visit focused. APTA offers more first-visit preparation tips.
Confirm the location and appointment arrangements through our contact page. Ask the office to clarify any referral, authorization, or cost questions before starting; this page does not promise insurance coverage or a fixed number of visits.
Frequently asked questions
When should I start outpatient physical therapy?
Follow the timing recommended by your surgical team. The appropriate setting and start date depend on the procedure and your circumstances. Scheduling a conversation with the clinic does not replace surgical clearance.
Is outpatient care the same as home-health rehabilitation?
No. Outpatient care means attending the clinic. Some people receive care at home after knee replacement before or instead of outpatient treatment. Tell the office about any current home-health services so the next step can be clarified. MedlinePlus describes both settings.
Will every patient need the same treatment or number of visits?
No fixed package is promised here. Ask what your individual plan recommends, why it is appropriate, and when it will be reviewed.
What if I develop a new symptom after surgery?
Follow your discharge instructions for urgent concerns and contact your surgical team rather than waiting for a routine PT appointment. Call 911 for sudden chest pain or shortness of breath. AAOS lists postoperative warning signs for knee replacement.
Discuss the next step in your recovery
Contact OCHW about post-surgical physical therapy in Orlando/Baldwin Park or Winter Park. We can begin with the practical question: what does the clinic need to review before your evaluation?
General service information, not individualized medical advice. Follow the instructions of your surgeon and treating clinicians.
